How to Have a Wilder, Wiser and Slimmer Body in 2013

Your “Wild” Body Wisdom

Every creature in nature has its own built-in, wild animal intelligence.

Wildcats monitor their own food intake. Bears hibernate in winter. Squirrels store nuts during autumn.

I’m sure you’ve wondered: how do they do all that stuff? How do they automatically know what to do to ensure their thriving?

The plain and simple answer is: they just know!

Guess what? You too have this built-in, inner knowing, simply because you are a part of this wild, wise animal world! Your highly evolved body already knows what to eat, how much to eat, and how to exercise, in order to slim down to your healthiest size.

Sound too wild to be true? Read on to learn how you can have a wilder, wiser and slimmer 2013, by becoming aware of, and learning to honor and work with, your own wild animal body wisdom.

Your Wild Animal Body Wisdom

Your body is not just a piece of furniture, a car or a computer that you can upgrade and manipulate as you please. It is a living, breathing animal – one with its own intelligence, pulse and radiant life, who has ingeniously evolved and improved over thousands of years.

Your body is also a female animal. The practice of playing with the English language and intentionally using the personal feminine pronoun she, to describe “her,” is a powerful tool that will help you stop treating your body like an object. Thinking of “her” as another, allows you to think of it as a relationship, and can help you become more aware of the messages your wild animal body wisdom is constantly communicating to you.

Think of it this way: When you care for a person, things like love, respect, nurturing and listening naturally bloom in your relationship with them.

Similarly, when you adopt the perspective of your body as your own furry, feminine, living being, you’ll start feeling inspired to show the same love and care you would shower on your beloved. This will pen up your connection to her for feeling what you really need to eat, or how you need to exercise, in order to slim down.

Body + Mind: A Lifelong Team

Your body is not the only intelligent part of you. As you already know, your mind is, too!

Your mind and your body are lifelong companions that are intimately united for life, and they are each equally intelligent.

Warning: If you are struggling with your weight, it can be really easy to feel like your body is the lesser of the two companions–-you might assume it’s the dirty one, the stupid one, or the one who has failed you somehow in gaining weight.

Sister, when you set up a hierarchy where you judge your body as “failing” you, and your mind as the intelligent, reliable one who needs to be in control, it can be dangerously easy to determine that your body doesn’t deserve love, attention or respect.

Here’s a tip: Imagine your body and mind as twins. One twin, your mind, has always been listened to, glorified, and given plenty of time and attention by your culture.

Your body, on the other hand, was told, “You are never quite right. You are functioning all wrong. You are fat and I really don’t like you.” Eventually, that twin, would feel insecure and would doubt her wisdom.

That is what has happened to your wonderful, innocent female body.

It’s my personal mission to encourage you to start listening to that twin, that beloved creature that is your body, so you will be able to receive and respond to her messages for you, more and more.

It was my mentor, Bill Hedberg, who first awoke in me the realization of my body as a living, breathing, female animal. He drilled into me that to find an end to my 10-year struggle with compulsive over-eating, I first and foremost needed to learn to pay more respect to her.

And now I say the same to you. Your “wild” animal body is full of intelligence, and she will absolutely guide you where you need to go in terms of slimming, health and strength, if only you will learn to listen to her and respect her.

Learning to Tap into Your “Wild” Animal Wisdom: A How-To Guide

Here’s a great list of guiding questions that will launch you on your way to getting a slimmer, wilder and wiser body in 2013:

  • What is she, your body, hungry for right now? (This can mean anything from food or drink, to a better quality of life.)
  • Even though I think I want to eat that entire bag of cookies, how will she feel after I eat it?
  • What time does she want to go to bed tonight?
  • What time does she want to get up?
  • How would she like to exercise today?
  • What’s something she’s been desiring for a while that I haven’t really acknowledged?

Being at war with your body is no way to start a new year. Especially since your body was designed by nature to be your greatest ally in getting slim, staying slim and flourishing in vibrant health!

Tell me in the questions below:

  1. Name a moment in everyday life where you have the opportunity to acknowledge, honor and listen to your body’s wild, animal wisdom.
  2. What does your body wisdom want to enjoy more of, or less of, in 2013?

  1. I’ve been trying to adhere to this frame of thought for a while, and it is hard. Every day, though, before I eat lunch, I ask myself what I really want before preparing my meal. It’s one time a day and it’s one meal, but it’s already making a difference.

(For the record, what she wants recently has been guacamole and mixed sprouts on multi-grain bread. It’s pretty tasty!)

  2. I love the twin analogy. I often forget to think of my body and mind as separate yet together. I also loved the reminder to refer to my body as Her and She. I’ve been forgetting to listen to her a lot lately. Thanks for reminding me.
