How To Understand Your Body’s Messages & Slim Down To Your Ideal Shape

Your Body, Your Animal

Have you ever thought of your body as your animal?

Probably not, I know.

But think about it: Your body loves care and affection, just like an animal.
Your body has basic needs for water, food and sleep, just like an animal.
Your body loves to be active, and is smart, just like an animal.
Most especially, your body can communicate, just like an animal!

Your female body, your unique female animal, speaks her own language.
Much how the dreams you have at night have their own symbolic language,
your female body communicates in her own way, too.

Now, your animal doesn’t speak in Old English, in big intellectual ideas, or even in logical ways – but she’s still got plenty to say, and her messages are absolutely brilliant! (Especially about what you need to bring your weight loss journey to its successful completion.)
So how does one listen to, and understand, their animal’s messages?

Your Amazing Animal’s Messages

Your body, your female animal, is constantly sending you messages through the language of feelings. With physical sensations, she tells you what she wants to eat and drink… as well as when, and when she’d prefer some of kind of nourishment instead. She tells you when she needs to use the bathroom, take a rest or move around.

She’ll “speak” through sensations that are subtle… and these sensations will definitely get louder if you ignore them and don’t respond!

Your body loves to communicate, and work together, with your mind.
But in this culture, we are taught that the mind is more important, more intelligent and more trustworthy than the body.

Aaagh! It’s simply not true! I’m here to tell passionately you, your body is also deeply smart, wise and trustworthy.

Have you ever considered what your body does, without your conscious mind instructing it?

For starters, your body breathes. Constantly! You never think about orchestrating that whole carbon dioxide to oxygen shenanigan, not even once. (Thank goodness or I know I’d grt distracted and forget!)
It automatically digests the food you put in it, guzzles up vitamins and minerals and fuels every little blessed inch of you.

It gets rid of waste, and gosh, if you are pregnant, it knows exactly how to grow and nourish a baby, and how to give birth to it!

Most importantly for you, dear member of the pleasurable weight loss movement, your body gives you messages, or “pay attention” alerts, by asking you to binge, crave and/or overeat.

Oh snap!

Were you thinking that your body’s urges for excess ice cream were a sign that she was broken or defective? Did you think her persuasive whisperings asking you to reach for sugar or chips or caffeine signified that she was untrustworthy?

It’s okay if you’ve thought this, I spent a decade thinking that before I discovered these teachings I’m passing along to you. I now invite you to think differently about these bodily messages and requests – consider that these messages are signals for you to pay attention inwards, to your emotional life, your spiritual life. Your inner world.

What might be happening in your life, that your brilliant body feels the need to metaphorically jump up and down, asking you to eat in ways that put on additional weight, a.k.a. “layers” of protection?

If your body is asking for more pleasurable foods containing sugar and fat, might pleasure is lacking in some part of your life?

Be gentle with your answers… and with your animal!

You Are the Guardian

You are the guardian of your body, your animal.

She is not yours to own or dominate, or force feed or restrict;
she is yours to nurture, take care of, and listen to.

Also, she is yours to trust, and to enjoy!

I invite you to bring her immense pleasure by dancing, singing, jumping while yelling on a trampoline, or whatever other uninhibited activity makes your wild animal heart come alive.

The more you listen to your body, and do what feels pleasurable, the healthier you will feel.
And feeling healthy… generates the state of body chemistry that invites your body to shed excess pounds, and produce your natural weight and shape.

So 2 questions for you.

1. So tell me, what natural, healthy foods make your body sing?
2. What pleasurable activity lights up your body, your animal?

Meow!! Let me know in the comments below.

  1. Dear Jena,

I find your approach very interesting.

    To your questions:
    1. Besides three balanced meals I love avocado with carrots or celery with peanut butter (or other similar combination) and in the evening a glass of wine with some cheese.
    2. Listening to music and moving with/along it or even watching a musical/dance performance make me forget my everyday stressful situations.

    Sincerely,
    Gabriele

  2. 1. Avocado, coconut and peanut butter spread, dark chocolate with sea salt, bananas.
    2. Going out and dancing my butt off and horse back riding.

  3. Hey Jena,

Great article! It was really needed, since I’ve been neglecting my lovely little animal for a few days now. Boy, did she tell me. Yesterday was my first semi-binge in over a month? Two? Anyways, I realized that I haven’t been paying attention to her. I have been drowning in other things so as not to address my feelings, and she made herself known. What a smart, beautiful little thing. Luckily, I awoke without feelings of anger towards myself, but instead attention to what I was denying myself — connection. Anyways, to answer your questions:
    1. Vegetables. I am grateful that I LOVE vegetables. I also love well-raised meats and good-for-you fats. I am a sucker for coconut anything. I tend to feel best, I’ve found, on a Paleo-ish diet without tons of meat. Clean, fresh and natural. Yum.
    2. Biking makes me feel free. I could weave in and out of the city for hours. I used to love running but have a resistance towards it now, and I’ve recently started dancing in my room in the mornings, which I love.

Oh what a journey this is…

  4. As to (1), lately my body is belting out arias of love and longing for this particular bespoke blend of green juice: cucumber, spinach, apple, ginger, lemon and pineapple. It’s MAGIC! I can feel my body humming happily as I drink it and my face glows too. This is the perfect post-work out breakfast!

As to (2), ooooh so very many (as I am now discovering thanks to you!)….but the top have to be reading and loving up my sweet kitties and pup. Reading makes my animal (who wears glasses and likes it very quiet) excited and attentive because she LOVES to learn. Loving up the kitty cats and puppy brings my animal to peace because it reassures her unconditional love is always within reach, from herself and others.

    xoxo

  5. Home grown tomato, avarcado with black pepper and lemon. Lettuce with a yummy dressing. Fresh from the garden strawberries, raspberries and pomegranate. Ginger, basil and limes. I have also been starting our day with ginger carrot spinach celery beetroot orange and apple juice my body also sings when I have it. And our 2 and 4 year olds love it as well.

I love love hiking we are so lucky to live 20 mins from a fabulous national park I go hiking with my husband, friends and our mums group but best of all I love going by myself really early in the morning and being the only one at the top it is such a great workout but more so it truly makes my soul sing. Sometimes I stop along the way to meditate or just have some quite thinking time. I like to dance with the kids or jump on the trampoline. And rock climbing with the kids. I would love to learn Bollywood dancing.
    Thankyou for this fabulous blog
