Your Body, Your Life: The Secret Mirror!

Hey gorgeous, let me ask you something:
what do you usually say to yourself when you look in the mirror?

Does your mind play the voice that says,
“Holy crap, I am one HOT, unique, radiant woman,”
or does it criticize your weight, your body, your shape,
until you end up feeling… like you just got pelted with a large stick?

Culturally, we women have been taught something really crazy:
to dislike our bodies –
to find them to be the wrong shape, the wrong size, etc. (Gah!)

If I were to ask a large group of women,
“Okay ladies, holla BACK if you love and appreciate your body
exactly the way it is!”
I suspect there would be very little hollerin’ back.

Sister, it’s time for that to CHANGE.
And that’s why you are here, to pioneer the way!

I’m sure you know that no matter what your shape/weight is,
there is a dance happening between your body and mind
a perfect waltz between your physical life and your mental/emotional/spiritual one.

Your female body is crazy brilliant —
an ever-moving choreography of function,
genius sensitivity,
feedback and wisdom.

Now… take a deep breath… and consider flirting with the idea…
of finding your present weight, lovably right.
Really lovably right.

And also…

Beyond appreciating its current state,
can you… maybe just…
consider there’s an ultra-secret signal behind your brilliant body’s present weight?

Your Brilliant Body’s Signals

Your body is a brilliant choreography of physiology.
It functions on breath,
it pulses with heart,
it pleasures, it circulates, it eliminates –
and it takes exquisite care of your survival in an infinite myriad of ways.

Consider the idea that your body,
which is on your side,
is mirroring your life…
and its extra weight is trying to SIGNAL you something.

Like a mirror, it is reflecting what is happening…
on the inside.

Sexy Science: Extra Weight is Wise

You body has the intelligence of stressresponse built into its workings.

This same stress response has kept our muscular, scantily clad ancestors alive,
ever since the time in human history when we were catching fish with spears,
sleeping in caves, and romping barefoot through tropical jungles.

When we first emerged on the planet, we noticed:
the bigger the animal, the bigger the threat!

And we adopted the same perspective –
the bigger the human body is, the safer it shall be!

And so, deep in your cellular memory is the understanding that:
extra weight and size equals protection and survival!

(Here’s your chance to pound your chest with your fists and screech a primal cry
–Aaaaaaaaeeeeeee!)

Modern Stress on Your Life and Body

In today’s world, stress is defined as “any real or imagined threat, and the body’s response
to it.”

Even though today’s stresses are different from those of our half-naked ancestors,
stress still produces a response (that slows down or even stops digestion) in the body,
telling the body to beware of danger and to protect itself.

Beyond that: guess what?
The mind-body connection is SO strong and interconnected,
that it cannot distinguish between a real or imagined threat!

Sooo…

A body under stress,

whether of the Neolithic or the Modern variety,

be it an approaching herd of angry rhinos,

or an attack of self-criticism or self-disapproval,
is drumming up a physiological recipe that produces:
say, 8 tbsps. of insulin,
1 cup of cortisol and
½ liter of norepinephrine.
*Basically, a stress hormone producing, digestion-stopping, extra-weight-holding cup o’ soup.*

Slurp!

Long story short:
when you feel stressed, or threatened in your life,
extra weight becomes protection.
You feel me? Do you understand how your brilliant body,
right now, is using excess weight
to mirror and reflect the stress in your life?

The Mirror Runs Deep

Let’s say you were abused – emotionally, physically, and/or sexually – at some point in your life.

Or…

Maybe you have a deep, aching desire you’ve not acknowledged,
or are ignoring,
and are judging as impractical, impossible and unimportant.

In both cases, it makes divinely perfect sense that your body,
which is designed to protect you,
would put on extra weight,
to guard (or cushion) you from the resulting grief or stress.

You might know exactly what is stressing or threatening you –
it’s very likely what comes to mind when you read this –
or, you might have no idea!

That’s okay.
Because you’re not alone in this journey.
Plus, now that you better understand how your body is always
working with you,
you can gently ask yourself:

  • How could my body weight be protecting or guarding me?
  • What could threat or stress–past, present, or even feared in the future–could my brilliant body be protecting me from, or reflecting to me?
  • And, if I identify, understand and address that stressor(s)… will I still need the protection of this extra weight?

Hmmmm.
You know, once you understand the secret message that your body is reflecting to you about your life,
then you’re setting the stage for feminine weight loss – the permanent, natural and life-changing kind.

  1. Jena,
I love this article. Our outer bodies are definitely a reflection of our inner thoughts. Once we realize how we use our excess fat as protection and as an excuse for something, the weight comes off easily — and we feel more complete.
    I love your work!

  2. Women are:
    Sexy.
The body, the mind, and the ever-growing connection between them.
    Hot.
The movement we have access to, the desires we want to explore.
    Beautiful.
The emotion we allow to leak, albeit rarely, and the realness we can exude.
    Stunning.
Every single woman I know is.

I think I’m slowly becoming one of them too.

Love the post. I’ll change some of my mirror words to include some of the above.
    Thanks for the ever-enlightening wisdom
    xoxo

  3. How many of us really look in the mirror? Not counting the quick check before we dash out the door to make sure our hair is okay 🙂
Standing in front of the mirror, naked or even with clothes on, is something I so often skip. Not today, today I’m going to stand and stare and appreciate!

  4. Hi Jena, I am asking my body this question now…. I am so angry at times as its growing fat….. (I live in india and will not be able to come for camp)….. I want to be thin….Purnima

    • Thank you for sharing Purnima. I understand your frustration. Keep talking to your body, your animal. Build a positive relationship with her and do all you can to push that anger out and let the love in.
      I support you!
      Love,
      Jena
